There are not many times I’ve heard precious statements regarding the rain. Personally, I love the rain. Commuting to work or attempting to get something done in the rain is never convenient, but when is it really? When it’s raining I remember all the fun times I had playing in it when I was a kid. Like the picture you see accompanying this post. When we are kids rain isn’t an inconvenience, it’s magical. Many small creatures come out in the rain, things like frogs, worms you know the things you loved to play with when you were a child.
For me, rain became an inconvenience when I started growing up; when I needed to keep a schedule and joined organized sports. I remember when I started to dislike the rain, my mom would tell me to stay inside or my little league game was rained out or the amusement park was closed all due to rain. I really began to hate it. I use the word, hate, because as I grew older I began dreaming of living in places where it didn’t rain.
Imagine that? Who would want to live somewhere based on the weather?
The rain provides luxuries we all take for granted – like life. I lived in the desert, Pacific Northwest, South, Southwest, Southeast and Northeast. Lately, I’ve wanted to change the name from the Northeast to the Pacific Northeast – it’s been raining a lot. Every place I’ve lived I enjoyed for different reasons.
The desert is probable the most stunning place on earth when it rains. You can see the storm approach for miles. The rain resembles a swarming screen of bees moving in unison – it’s captivating. The Pacific Northwest with lush forests and mountain terrains surround you like a big green blanket in the spring. The mountains never seem to end. In the South, the Smoky Mountains have this mist that never seems to leave. The Southeast has it’s hurricanes that can be devastating but, the thunderstorms are truly magnificent.
Here in the Northeast, I live on a vast coastal plain that is the product of 200 million years of erosion of the Appalachian Mountains. By the time those erosion sediments made their way to where I live it was mostly fine ground sand, silt, and clay; which is the substrate for one of the most unique ecosystems in the world, the Pine Barrens.
All this was made possible by rain.
Actually, all of these memories as well as the love for where I live were made possible by rain. So, the next time it rains go ahead and run around in a puddle and show some appreciation for rain – like a kid.
