field-day1

Spring has a way of elevating a rush of childhood memories. As a child spring meant many things for me like fishing, baseball, riding bikes but, anticipation, was the one thing on my young mind. Summer break is coming soon. The climatic sign of school coming to an end, for me, was field day. Imagine my excitement when my oldest daughter brought home a note from school inviting parents to her Field Day festivities – I couldn’t wait!

My excitement dwindled as I continued to read, “The kindergarten class time is 8:30am – 9:30am on Monday”. What?!?!?!? We are only going to have an hour for field day?

I remember my field day being a three day triumph culminating with a crowning of the victorious class in colored ribbons followed by a celebration of pizza and grape soda in 3 liter bottles – or something along lines.

I RSVP’d brokenhearted with malcontent.

My daughter’s field day was an hour, not even a half day, and at the end we sat down and drank bottled water – only one a piece.

I left the school feeling unsatisfied and cheated – for her.

Am I forgetting my childhood? Did my events unfold differently? I still have the ribbons to prove it though. Has field day lost its significance? Am I making too much of a big deal about this?

Please tell me what you think.

    what? seriously?

my girls field day was all day, so from 9-2. they were wiped out! but we all had such a great time.

granted now it’s all about doing teamwork things instead of competing against each other but i spent half the day with ems half with boo and we all sat under a tree and had lunch.

definitely something worth taking off work for.

at least she got to have you there to spend it with.

it’s like the schools trying to get rid of recess?? my kids aren’t allowed recess on the days they have gym? even the kindergartners.

and they wonder why the kids have a hard time focusing all day in class.

    sheesh.

I think when you’re a kid, an hour can feel like forever. It’s visiting someplace new or doing something different that is the good thing.

Still, a one hour field day with bottled water seems too short! You’re right, it should be a half or full day off from school.

I would have felt a little better with flavored water.
